Bringing home a puppy is exciting, but it doesn’t take long before the real work starts.

Potty accidents. Biting and mouthing. Jumping. Pulling on the leash. Getting into everything. Not listening when distracted. Maybe your puppy is doing great one minute and acting like they’ve never heard a command the next.

That’s normal. Your puppy is learning how the world works.

The problem is that puppies are also learning habits every single day. Behaviors that seem cute or harmless when your puppy is small can become much harder to deal with as the dog gets older.

At Empire K9 Dog Training, puppy training takes place in your home so we can teach your puppy where everyday life actually happens. Just as important, I teach you how to communicate with your puppy, set clear expectations, and continue the training between sessions.

My Approach to Puppy Training

Puppy training isn’t about trying to make a young dog perfect.

It’s about building the right foundation.

1. Start With Communication

Before expecting your puppy to listen, we need a way to clearly communicate what we want.

I teach owners how to use simple commands, markers, leash guidance, rewards, praise, and fair boundaries so the puppy begins understanding when they’re making the right choice.

The goal is consistency. If one person allows something and another person doesn’t, the puppy gets confused quickly.

Everyone in the household should be working from the same playbook.

2. Build the Basic Obedience Foundation

Depending on your puppy’s age and progress, we can work on foundational skills such as:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Place
  • Come when called
  • Walking on leash
  • Waiting at doors
  • Staying calm around distractions
  • Handling and general manners

We don’t just teach a puppy a command and call it finished.

The puppy needs repetition and practice in different situations before that behavior becomes reliable.

3. Work on Puppy Problems Before They Become Adult Problems

A lot of unwanted adult behavior starts during puppyhood.

Jumping is a good example.

A small puppy jumps on someone because they’re excited, and the person reaches down and pets them. Without realizing it, we just rewarded the jumping.

Months later, the puppy is much bigger and we’re wondering why the dog keeps jumping on everybody.

The dog didn’t suddenly develop a bad habit. The behavior has been practiced and reinforced for months.

That’s why puppy training isn’t only about commands. We also work on everyday household behaviors such as jumping, mouthing, chewing, potty-training routines, crate routines, boundaries, and learning how to settle down.

4. Teach the Owner, Not Just the Puppy

This is one of the most important parts of my training.

I don’t want your puppy to listen only when I’m holding the leash.

You need to understand how to work with your own dog.

I’ll show you what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, what your timing should look like, and how to practice between sessions.

Training doesn’t stop when I leave your house. The work you do between lessons is where a lot of your puppy’s progress is made.

Benefits of Puppy Training

Puppy training can help you:

  • Establish good habits while your puppy is young
  • Build a clear communication system with your puppy
  • Improve basic obedience and leash manners
  • Create better household boundaries
  • Work on jumping, mouthing, chewing, and other common puppy behaviors
  • Develop a more reliable recall as your puppy progresses
  • Learn how to continue training correctly between sessions

Every puppy develops differently. Age, breed, temperament, previous experiences, consistency at home, and the amount of practice you put in can all affect progress.

The goal isn’t perfection overnight. The goal is to build a solid foundation you can continue developing as your puppy grows.

Who Is Puppy Training For?

Puppy training is for owners who want to start building good habits early instead of waiting until unwanted behaviors become established.

It can be a good fit if you recently brought home a puppy, you’re struggling with common puppy behaviors, or you simply want professional guidance on how to raise and train your puppy correctly.

Because training takes place in your home, I can also see your puppy’s actual environment and help you address routines and behaviors that may not show up in a traditional group class.
