Is My Dog Reactive or Aggressive? How to Tell the Difference
Barking and lunging on leash looks scary — but reactivity and aggression are different problems with different solutions. Here's how to tell them apart.
You're walking your dog, another dog appears, and yours explodes — barking, lunging, hackles up. Embarrassing, stressful, and scary. The first question every owner asks us is the same: 'Is my dog aggressive?' Usually, the answer is no — but the distinction matters, because the training path is different.
Reactivity: too much emotion, not enough coping
A reactive dog overreacts to a trigger — other dogs, strangers, skateboards — out of frustration, fear, or over-excitement. The tell: the explosion happens at a distance, on leash, and the dog often can't take treats or hear you at all. Off leash or at a distance, many reactive dogs are perfectly social.
Aggression: intent to make something go away
Aggression involves genuine intent — stiff body, hard stare, deep growl, and escalation that continues even when the trigger retreats. Resource guarding, bite history with contact, and aggression toward family members fall in this category and deserve immediate professional evaluation.
Why the difference matters
Reactivity responds beautifully to counter-conditioning and structured obedience — we see dramatic changes in weeks. True aggression needs careful management, safety protocols, and honest expectations. Anyone promising a quick 'cure' for aggression is selling something.
Either way, the starting point is the same: a professional in-home assessment where we can see your dog's actual behavior in their real environment. That's what our $99 assessment is for — and it's why we never diagnose over the phone.
