Is Your Dog Ready for Off-Leash Training?

Before progressing into off-leash work, your dog should already demonstrate solid:

  • Heel / loose-leash walking
  • Sit-Stay
  • Down-Stay
  • Recall on a 30-foot long line
  • Leash pressure
  • Focus
  • Impulse control

We also want the dog proofed in more than one environment, typically at home and in a park, before increasing the difficulty.

If the foundation isn’t ready, we strengthen it first.

What We Work Toward

Advanced training can work toward:

  • Off-leash heel
  • Sit and Down under distraction
  • Down in motion
  • Reliable Recall
  • Recall away from people
  • Recall away from other dogs
  • Recall away from environmental distractions
  • Greater impulse control and focus

Depending on the dog and training environment, clients may work toward greater freedom during activities such as hiking and other appropriate outdoor settings.

Off-Leash Is the Next Step — Not the First Step

Removing the leash before the dog is ready doesn’t create reliability.

Empire K9 builds obedience in layers:

Foundation → Public Proofing → Distance → Distractions → Advanced Off-Leash Work

Existing obedience clients can purchase additional sessions to continue progressing toward advanced and off-leash reliability.

The number of additional sessions depends on the dog’s current training, owner consistency, and level of reliability being pursued.

Training Tools

E-collar training may be incorporated when appropriate and recommended by the trainer, but it is not automatically required for every dog.

Equipment and progression are determined by the individual dog and training plan.

Off-Leash Dog Training FAQs

Can my dog start directly with off-leash training?

Only if your dog already demonstrates the required obedience foundation. Otherwise, foundational training comes first.

How many sessions will my dog need?

It depends on your dog's current level of obedience, distractions, your consistency, and training goals.

Does off-leash training mean I can take the leash off anywhere?

No. You remain responsible for following applicable leash laws, property rules, park regulations, and safety requirements.

Do you come to homes throughout the Inland Empire?

Yes. Get private in-home training throughout the Inland Empire. We begin where the behavior happens and add public proofing only when your dog is ready.

Which program is the best fit for this service?
